Polish American sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski (1908-1982) grew up in Boston and worked as a ship maker in his early years. Ziolkowski was working as a professional artist by 1932, selling commissioned sculpture in the Northeastern US. He won first prize at the New York World’s Fair in 1939 and was asked to move to the Black Hills of South Dakota and assist in the carving of Mt. Rushmore. Ziolkowski was working as a professional artist by 1932, selling commissioned sculpture in the Northeastern US. He won first prize at the New York World’s Fair in 1939 and was asked to move to the Black Hills of South Dakota and assist in the carving of Mt. Rushmore. Ziolkowski began the Crazy Horse Memorial in 1948 which is to be the largest sculpture in the world upon completion with dimensions planned at 641 feet wide by 563 feet high. His family is still working on the mountain monument today.
