Polish American sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski (1908-1982) grew up in Boston and worked as a ship maker in his early years. Ziolkowski was working as a professional artist by 1932, selling commissioned sculpture in the Northeastern US. He won first prize at the New York World’s Fair in 1939 and was asked to move to the Black Hills of South Dakota and assist in the carving of Mt. Rushmore.
